Who was
Esquilache?
He was an
Italian minister during the rule of Charles III
What were
the reasons of the mutiny?
There were
several reasons because Esquilache imposed various measures:
a) The
rising costs of bread, oil, coal and meat
b) The liberalization
of the grain trade
c) Spanish
people hated his Italian origin
The last
straw was the replacement of the wide-brimmed hat for the three-cornered hat (French
style) and the obligation of wearing shorts capes. He wanted to improve public
safety.
When did
the mutiny start?
It started
in 1766 and Esquilache leaved Spain.
The rioters wanted only Spanish ministers
